Writing email subject lines that get opens is about clarity and curiosity, never trickery.

Principles

  • Be clear: say what is inside.
  • Be specific: numbers and details beat vague promises.
  • Be relevant: match the subject to the reader's interest.
  • Be honest: the email must deliver what the subject promises.

Length

Many inboxes show only the first 30 to 50 characters on mobile, so put important words first.

Formulas to try

  • The benefit: "Fix your website speed in 3 steps"
  • The question: "Is your Google profile complete?"
  • The deadline: "Offer ends Friday"
  • The personal: "Quick idea for your shop, Priya"

Use preview text

The line after the subject is extra space. Use it to add detail rather than leaving it as "View in browser".

Avoid common problems

Skip all capitals, excessive punctuation and misleading "Re:" prefixes. They harm trust and can trigger spam filters.

Test

Send two versions to small, equal groups and compare clicks, not only opens. Keep a log of what you learn.

Remember the goal

An open is not the finish line. The email content and call to action must create the result.
