Your brand story is not a long history of the company. It is a clear explanation of why you exist, who you help and why that matters. A good one makes people feel something and gives them a reason to choose you.

The five parts of a brand story

  1. The origin: what problem or moment started the business.
  2. The customer: who you serve and what they struggle with.
  3. The belief: what you think should be different in your industry.
  4. The approach: how you do things differently, in practical terms.
  5. The outcome: what changes for the customer after working with you.

Simple template

"We started [business] because [problem we saw]. We believe [belief]. So we [approach], helping [customer] to [outcome]."

Fill it in plainly, then trim. If a line sounds like an advertisement, rewrite it.

Make it believable

  • Use specific details rather than big claims.
  • Mention real challenges, not only wins.
  • Keep the customer as the main character and the brand as the guide.
  • Never invent origin stories. Customers can sense it, and it damages trust.

Hypothetical example

A hypothetical handloom brand might write: "Our founder noticed that weavers in her town sold sarees at low prices through middlemen. We believe makers should be paid fairly and customers should know who made their cloth. So we sell direct and put each weaver's name on the label, helping buyers own something with a real story." It is short, specific and centred on a belief.

Where to use it

  • About page, shortened to a few paragraphs
  • Pitch decks and proposals, see the pitch deck design guide
  • Social bios and highlights
  • Packaging inserts and thank-you cards
  • Job descriptions and recruitment pages

Create short and long versions

Write a one-line version, a 50-word version and a 200-word version. Teams can then use the right length anywhere. Link it with your brand messaging framework so claims stay aligned.

Keep the story alive

A story is not a one-time page. Share customer stories, behind-the-scenes moments and milestones that prove the belief. For wider technique, read storytelling in marketing.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a brand story be?

Start with a short version of one to three sentences. Longer versions are useful for your website and presentations.

What if my business has no dramatic origin?

You do not need one. Focus on the belief and the customer outcome. A clear purpose is more persuasive than a dramatic tale.

Should the founder be in the story?

Often yes, especially for small businesses where people buy from people. Keep it relevant to the customer.
