Amazon Ads Basics for Sellers: Sponsored Products to Start
By Kavin P · · 2 min read

Many online shoppers begin their search on a marketplace rather than a search engine. Amazon Ads lets sellers pay to appear in those searches and on product pages. For Indian sellers on Amazon, it can speed up visibility for new listings, but it will not rescue a weak product page.
Program names, eligibility and menus change, so confirm what is available to your seller account.
Fix the listing first
Ads send traffic to your product page. If the page is weak, you pay for visits that do not convert. Before spending, check:
- Clear, honest title with the main keyword.
- Good images showing the product from several angles and in use.
- Bullet points that answer common questions.
- Competitive price and delivery options.
- Reviews and ratings that do not scare buyers away.
- Stock availability, since ads on out-of-stock items waste money.
The main ad types
- Sponsored Products: ads for individual listings in search results and product pages. This is usually the best starting point.
- Sponsored Brands: ads featuring your logo and several products, for brand-registered sellers.
- Sponsored Display: ads that can reach shoppers on and off the marketplace, such as people who viewed your product.
Availability depends on your account and category.
Starting with Sponsored Products
- Automatic targeting: the system chooses relevant searches. It is good for discovering which terms people use.
- Manual targeting: you choose keywords and match types. Move your best discovered terms here for control.
A simple routine is to start automatic, review the search term report after enough data, move winners to manual and add poor terms as negatives. The logic matches the approach in the Google Ads negative keywords guide.
Budget and bids
Set a daily budget you can afford to lose while learning. Start with sensible bids based on suggestions and adjust slowly. Remember that your selling price, product cost, fees and shipping decide how much advertising your margin can carry. Our marketing ROI calculation guide shows how to do the sums.
Metrics to track
- Spend and sales attributed to ads.
- Advertising cost of sales, which is ad spend divided by ad-attributed sales.
- Click-through rate, as a sign of relevance.
- Conversion rate on your listing.
- Total sales trend, not only ad-attributed sales.
Hypothetical example
Imagine a seller of cotton kurtis with a new listing and few reviews. The seller improves images, adds sizing details, then runs an automatic campaign with a small budget. After reviewing search terms, the seller moves the clearly relevant ones to a manual campaign and blocks irrelevant ones. This is an illustration only.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need brand registration to advertise?
Some ad types need it, others do not. Check eligibility in your account.
Should I advertise a product with no reviews?
It can work, but poor conversion is likely if the page lacks trust signals. Improve the listing first.
Is Amazon advertising better than Google ads?
They serve different situations. For a comparison of paid and organic thinking, see [SEO vs PPC](/blog/seo-vs-ppc-which-is-better).
